DPN DICOM Router

Images-on-Call's DICOM Private NetworkTM (DPN) DICOM Router provides a means for Radiology off-hours services to securely obtain images and move them to a centralized location via the Internet.

DPN - Client: The DPN Client DICOM router software will accept patient studies from medical imaging modalities as a DICOM Storage SCP (Service Class Provider). It will then push the images across the Internet to a DICOM server or workstation via DPN Host or Receive software (DICOM store and forward).

  • NEW!! Institution Name Aliasing. A great new feature for practices reading for multiple institutions. The DPN Client can be programmed to replace the DICOM institution name tag in all images with a name entered at install time. All images passing through the DPN client at a given site will have the same institution name regardless of what has been programmed at the modality. This greatly simplifies the job of sorting studies on your PACS. No more studies with a wrong or MISSING institution name.

  • NEWER!!! Ultra-fast Storage SCP accepts images faster from the imaging modalities. Accepts up to 600 CT images-per-minute.

  • A computer should be dedicated to the DPN Client application to permit the receiving and transmitting of images by the software without user intervention. The installation process configures the Client computer for unattended operation.

  • The configuration of the Client computer as described in the installation instructions, helps ensure the security of patient information for HIPAA compliance, as well as ensuring uninterrupted operation of the system.

DPN - Host:  The DPN Host DICOM router software receives images from multiple Client locations, de-crypts and de-compresses the files, and then moves them to the site's PACS Server or WorkStation.

DPN - Receive:  The DPN Receive DICOM router software resides on a workstation running any third party DICOM workstation software which includes a DICOM Storage Service Class Provider. It receives images from multiple remote locations, de-crypts and de-compresses the files, and then moves them to the workstation software as a Storage Service Class User. The installation package asks for the workstation's expected AE title and port number to complete the configuration.

Advantages of the DPN over traditional VPNs:

  • When using the DPN DICOM router suite, all images are compressed, encrypted and authenticated using a private communications protocol to be sent over the public Internet. A VPN is not necessary for maintaining the security of Protected Health Information (PHI). However, a VPN may be used if your customer's policies require it. Patient data security is maintained by our industry recognized encryption process, specifically, (for those who wish to know), a stream cypher cryptographic algorithm with feedback and 128 bit private key.

  • The DPN DICOM router software suite creates a DICOM image router on the hospital imaging network. There are no special routings or network gateway entries required on the imaging modalities.

  • All image transfers are  made to the DPN Client with store and forward capability. If any transmission problems occur between the hospital and the reading center, the images will remain on the DPN Client computer until they are successfully transferred to the intended destination.

  • Configuration changes to the Client hospital’s Internet rarely require action on the Client computer or imaging modalities since all connections are established outbound from the DPN Client to a static public IP address. (VPN connections must be reconfigured on both ends after a change is made to the client hospital Internet connection, such as an ISP change.)

  • The only hardware requirement to create the DPN Client DICOM router is a standard, off-the-shelf PC with network capability running a current Microsoft Windows operating system. Configuration is simple and secure.

  • Modalities that don’t support image compression, can still have the speed advantage of Images-on-Call Controlled Quality Wavelet image compression. The DPN Client performs compression custom tailored to the modality and image type to provide the highest image quality in the least time.
